From Dr. Henry Adams:

Thanks for sending me the drawing signed "Benton" which in my opinion is indeed an authentic work: a study for a chapter heading for the 1939 Limited Editions Club printing of Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer—for chapter XXXI, "Found and Lost Again." It's very close to the final illustration but more loosely and vigorously executed. If you look at it closely next to the illustration in the book you can see that while some lines are quite close, other shapes are handled a bit differently, and the cross-hatching has a slightly freer quality. I wouldn't be surprised if Benton used some form of tracing to get from this drawing to the final, slightly more polished drawing for the final book, which is now in the Missouri State Historical Society in Columbia, Missouri. While the final drawing is fully worked out in pen, this drawing employs a slightly irregular pencil line for the frame, again suggesting that this is a working study that just preceded the final drawing. The signature in pencil looks authentic.

Our December 5 Fine Art Auction will also offer a brand new category of 20th century Art: the art of Hot Rod Pinstripe Panels. This evolution from embellishing fenders to creating stand alone works of Art on panel is a new approach to eye candy for Motorheads and collectors of Modern Art alike.

Robert Joseph Walker (1920 - 1990)
Born and raised in California, Walker served three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Afterwards he attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, but returned to California after one semester. In 1964 he moved to Taos, New Mexico before returning to Lindsborg in 1971, where he became interested in acrylics and created original paintings in the Swedish Folk Art style. He became known locally and internationally for these folk paintings, and continued to do them on commission. His works are on public exhibit at Soderstrom Elementary School where he assisted in the painting of a mural in memory of Mariella Walker, who taught first grade there; and at Farmer's State Bank where he and his wife, Rita, were commissioned to do huge murals of Swedish Folk Art.

Walker had an active role in the "art colony" of Lindsborg and was a part of the original "Hardly Known School of Kansas Landscape Painters," a group of artists brought together by their nationally-known friend, Keith Crown, when he came to Bethany College as artist-in-residence in 1985. Walker died in a Salina, Kansas hospital in 1990.

On January 10, 2014, Dirk Soulis Auctions sold this fine collection of more than 100 Paintings, Prints and Works on Paper – along with Furniture and Decorative Arts featuring monumental Boehm Porcelain, a large Tabriz Pictorial Persian Carpet and a Florence Knoll Verdi Alpi Marble Top Conference Table.

The Layne Christensen Corporation, just recently awarded a 57 million dollar contract for the San Francisco Subway Project, is a global water management construction and drilling company that provides responsible solutions for water, mineral and energy sources around the world. They may be best known for their role in the rescue of trapped miners in the Chilean copper mine collapse of 2010. It was their team and their experience and their engineering that opened a 26-inch wide rescue shaft through solid rock to free the 33 miners trapped more than 2,300 feet underground. The Layne approach took two months less than the next most optimistic rescue plan.

In late 2012, the Layne Christensen Company, then based in Mission Woods, Kansas, announced that it would move its global corporate headquarters from Kansas to Houston, Texas. With this move and corresponding changes in direction came the decision to liquidate the bulk of their corporate collection previously on display in the offices, conference rooms, and common areas of the former world headquarters.

Thus, an unreserved public auction to disperse this impressive collection occured on January 10, 2014 at the Overland Park Convention Center, located at 6000 College Boulevard in Overland Park, Kansas. Public preview of the material occured on January 9th. And inspection of the major pieces in the collection was arranged by appointment.

Auction bidders participated live in the sale room, by telephone, absentee, and by live Internet simulcast.

We appreciate your interest.
