316: CATLIN, GEORGE, "NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS," 1841, 2 VOLS.

Full title: "Letters and Notes on the Manners, Customs, and Condition of the North American Indians." London: Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly, 1841, 8vo, half calf with marbled boards and endpapers. Vol. I with 264 pp., vol. II 266. Illustrations printed by Meyer's & Co. First edition tabbed in errata note in preliminaries, noting "for Frederick read Zedekiah" on page 104, etc. According to Howes there are 309 plates, not 312 as called for on the title-page with plates 23, 113, 114, 137, 142, 149, 159, 246 and 247 missing but with numbers 1011/2, 210 1/2 and three unnumbered plates added. Our copy similarly has 309 plates, but differing slightly from Howes' collation. Ours: Missing plates 2, 23, 137, 142, 149, 159, 246, 247 but with plates 113-114. Three unnumbered plates including frontispiece and two unnumbered plates with four images each facing pp. 150 & 154, and with added plates numbered 101-1/2 & 210-1/2. Another anomaly is Howes' statement that the title-page calls for 312 plates. Title page incorrectly outlines 400 illustrations. Statement agrees with the bibliographic description in Wagner-Camp, "The Plaines and the Rockies." Lot also includes a copy of Catlin's "Life Among the Indians," London: Gall and Inglis, 8vo, 352 pp., with title page but missing all preliminaries.
Volume I with loose endpaper and final leaf, plus pulls to binding in front a reverse. Volume II with loose front flyleaf and leaves through the title page. Both volumes show wear and age, toning and signs of foxing. Average condition.
