8: A RARE TALL GLOBE RAILROAD LANTERN MARKED R G W RY

The wire frame with embossed maker's mark of STAR HEAD LIGHT CO ROCHESTER N.Y. USA. and embossed railroad marking of R G W RY (Rio Grande Western Railway) on the shoulder, tall extended lip glass globe with cast lettering of R G W RY in rectangular box and in high relief.

According to some sources, this fine lantern is currently the only known example to exist by this particular maker.

The Rio Grande Western Railway was founded in 1889. It was the standard gauge-revision of the original Utah based narrow gauge Denver & Rio Grande Western *Railway*. It ran under this name until 1908, when it was fully incorporated into the Denver & Rio Grande *Railroad*. ANY lanterns from this road are considered an important piece of Western railroad history.
Very good original condition, untouched frame with variegated surface, a very few very minor rim flakes as shown, likely the result of the original glass shearing and grinding process, there are no chips, cracks or repairs.
