The commissioned oil on canvas with artist's signature lower right front is described as follows on a label verso: ''This painting, ''Red Peonies'', was commissioned by Rotary District 547 to be presented to retiring Governor Si Elliott of Pueblo, Colorado. The Elliotts requested that the painting be of red peonies and to include two of their personal possessions, an old book and crystal decanter. A frame to suit the painting was designed and made by the artist. It is the hope of the artist that this painting gives enjoyment to the Elliotts through the coming years. June 12, 1968. The paper label is signed Clayton Staples. There is brass plaque with similar dedication on the reverse as well.....''.

The artist Clayton Staples is most associated with the state of Kansas where he founded, was head of, and established the reputation for the art department of Wichita State University. He also traveled the world, visiting all the great museums and summered in Gloucester, Massachusetts where he painted alongside many major American artists.
Canvas measures 28.25 x 34.25 with a framed size of 35.5 x 41.25 inches.
Very good original untouched condition. There are no issues of scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up.
