11: AFTER THOMAS HART BENTON (1889-1975) LITHOGRAPH

Julie Gordon (1941)
The lithograph from an edition of only 25 prints is signed in the plate, no pencil signature. The subject is the artist's interpretive portrait of Julie Gordon, a character from Vereen Bell's novel 'Swamp Water,' sitting in an antique American ladderback chair with splint seat. The story first appeared as a serial in the Saturday Evening Post. It was made into a movie in 1941 and Thomas Hart Benton was commissioned by Twentieth-Century Fox Film Corporation to do a series of lithographs portraying the main characters, including Julie Gordon. This image and the rest of the commission is known as Benton's Swamp Water Series.
Image measures 9 x 8.25 with a framed size of 20.75 x 18.75 inches.
Very good to fine condition, the full untrimmed sheet, not laid down, no damage, stain, puncture or repair; framed to archival standards in acid free mounts.
