39: JOSEPH MEERT (1905-1989) EGG TEMPERA ON CANVAS

Joseph Meert (1905-1989)
Railroad Yards (1937)
The fine and rare large oil on canvas in the egg tempera medium with glazes signed lower right and dated 37.

Joseph Meert studied with Thomas Hart Benton in New York at The Art Students League and in Kansas City at the Kansas City Art Institute where he served as Benton's assistant. Lore has it that he was a favorite of the old instructor. The stretcher of this painting bears interesting information including Meert's address lined out and replaced with that of the Art Institute. The frame is apparently the original.
Canvas measures 28.5 x 34.25 with a framed size of 34.25 x 40 inches.
Very good original untouched condition. There are no issues of major scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up.
Provenance: From the estate of a Kansas City, Missouri family occupying the same home very near the Kansas City Art Institute since 1962.
