311: A 19C. MARINE CHRONOMETER SIGNED B.F & T.M. DAVIES

The three-stage brass bound mahogany box with gimbals securing a numbers-matching fusee movement fronted by a silvered dial with black enamel Roman numeral chapter ring enclosing the up/down indicator dial and seconds bit along with the name 'B. F. & T. M. DAVIES, Utica, N.Y.;' the solid mahogany case has an inlaid plaque lettered O ADAMS No. 36 Lombard St. London.

The timepiece is attributed to watchmaker Thomas M. Davies (Utica, New York, 1833-1882) who partnered with his son Benjamin Franklin Davies in 1858. Adams of Lombard Street, who was also a maker of chronometers, appears in this case to be the retailer.
Measures 7.25 x 6.75 x 6.75 inches.
