200: A GORHAM MARTELÉ ART NOUVEAU SILVER WATER PITCHER

The shapely form with high arching handle and gracefully undulating rim washed in gold is chased with repoussé iris flowers on stylized stems rising from the four organic pod-like corners of the integral base. The base is stamped Martele with Lion, Anchor and letter G hallmarks over the silver standard designation of 950-1000 FINE.

The base also bears the hand engraved dedication QUEENE FERRY JUNE 8TH 1901.

A suffragette, philanthropist, advocate of early childhood education, and supporter of the arts named Queene Ferry was married in 1901 to a man named Avery Coonley. Around 1910, Queene and Avery Coonley, both heirs of large fortunes, commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to build the landmark Avery Coonley House and two other structures on their estate near Chicago, Illinois.

Gorham company records confirm that Martele .950 silver pitcher 3806 entered production on Oct. 17 1900, size: 9-3/8, weight 45.15, making time: 44, maker: Frederick Bower; chasing time: 58, net $180.00.
Measures 9.5 x 9 inches, weighs 44.95 ozt.
Very good condition, noting a shallow dent along one side. There are no issues of damage, repair or heavy wear. The base is engraved as shown.
Provenance: The estate of Morton and Estelle Sosland.In Kansas City, the Sosland family name is synonymous with both giving, and the arts. Of their many contributions to the community, 'The Soslands gave one of the nation's finest private collections of American Indian art to the Nelson-Atkins' museum (nelson-atkins.org).
