The pine case constructed from a single plank having three bentwood corners, and one joined corner, is fitted with a cedar base joined by wood pegs, the cedar cover has a nicely chiseled hollow-carved interior, the case sides are carved in relief and painted in traditional Kwakwaka'wakw motifs, the base is signed and titled by the maker from Vancouver, British Columbia.
Measures 10 x 11.25 x 9.5 inches.
Very good condition. There are no chips, cracks, repairs, splits, scratches or areas of heavy wear.
Provenance: The estate of Morton and Estelle Sosland.In Kansas City, the Sosland family name is synonymous with both giving, and the arts. Of their many contributions to the community, 'The Soslands gave one of the nation's finest private collections of American Indian art to the Nelson-Atkins' museum (nelson-atkins.org). The content of this auction bears testament to their keen eye and varied interests. No property has been added; each lot here originates with the Sosland family and sells without reserve.
