329: A 17TH C. GERMAN BELLARMINE JUG FROM THE THAMES

The early 17th century German bottle form stoneware vessel with stamped oval medallion on the bulbous front, impressed bearded male mask on the slender rising neck, great mottled salt glaze with the effects of firing, the crude bottom with evidence of having been wired off the potter's wheel.

Bellarmine storage jugs came from Germany in the late 16th/early 17th century and were often found along the Thames at London.
Measures 8.25 x 4.5 inches.
Very good condition. There are no chips, cracks, repairs, scratches or areas of heavy wear.
Provenance: The estate of Morton and Estelle Sosland.In Kansas City, the Sosland family name is synonymous with both giving, and the arts. Of their many contributions to the community, 'The Soslands gave one of the nation's finest private collections of American Indian art to the Nelson-Atkins' museum (nelson-atkins.org).
