An oil on canvas after the painting by August Riedel (German, 1799-1883) in which the biblical figure Judith stands holding a sword, the decapitated head of Holofernes partially visible behind her on the left.
A summary of the biblical story reads, "Judith, a beautiful widow, is able to enter the tent of Holofernes because of his desire for her. Holofernes was an Assyrian general who was about to destroy Judith's home, the city of Bethulia. Overcome with drink, he passes out and is decapitated by Judith...".
Unsigned, the size of the work equals that of the original at 53 x 39 inches and is displayed in an exceptional period frame with extensive openwork caving, dimensions 71 x 56.5 inches. The canvas is ink stamped verso 'WIMMER & CO GALLERY OF FINE ARTS, MUNICH'. Wimmer & Co was founded in 1825. Completely original and untouched condition. Provenance: The Joseph Candioto Trust. We ship in-house for all items with the exception of very large and or very fragile pieces and some international shipments.
All original and free from repair, inpainting, re-lining, strip lining or skinned surface. The surface is with layers of grime and dust. There are a few scattered abrasions and very light scratches, the painting has slipped in the original frame and the canvas has torn along the top stretcher
