Firearms, Knives and Trophy Mounts

Monday, December 19th 2016

A super clean collection purchased new and meticulously cared for by a hunter/collector and his wife who lived in Africa for a number of years. They were very particular about the care, storage and handling of their firearm collection. Many of their guns have never been fired. Some have only been test fired. All are like new.

Of the trophy mounts, most score in the range eligible for Safari Club International registration.

A Christmas Miracle:

Local Family Discovers Hoard of Rare Dresden Ornaments

Thursday, December 15th 2016

Overland Park, Kansas -- A woman from the metro has uncovered a stash of the rarest, most desirable and expensive of all Antique Christmas Ornaments.
Known as Dresdens after their place of origin in Germany, these pressed and gilded three-dimensional, hand-finished paper ornaments rarely survived and are thus highly prized by collectors today.
And speaking of collectors, few can boast as many in their collection as this unsuspecting homemaker - more than 100! "They've been part of my life forever, but I had no idea they were so rare and so sought after," she says. So, in a flurry of downsizing, she's offering them at auction, with special thanks to her great grandfather, musician J. Louis Mundwyler and his family from San Francisco. They bought the precious baubles for their tree back around 1870 and the unpretentious little gems have been in the family ever since. They range in shape and theme from birds and animals to genre themes of the day. Very few have an actual Christmas theme but instead they resemble Turtles, Horses, Polo Players, a Steeplechase Rider, Steam Engines, Paddle Boats, an Elk, Butterflies, Owls, Elephants, a Rooster, Colorful 3-D Parrots, Sea Shells, Ships, Lions, Turkey, Dogs of many breeds horse Drawn Wagons filled Brush and much more. One of the rarest is the Winged Griffin Christmas Cracker. Christmas Crackers were small, sometimes figural, candy containers that were pulled open with a CRACK! Very few children left those on the tree and thus very few of them still exist.
The collection will be up for bid until December 15th through an online auction executed by Dirk Soulis Auctions.

World Treasures from

The 50 Year Collection of Joe Candioto

Friday, July 8th 2016

For more than two decades, Joseph's Jewelry in the Georgian Village Shops was one of Kansas City's best kept secrets among lovers of fine jewelry. With his own personal sense of style and connoisseurship, Joe Candioto quietly became something of a "jeweler to the stars" known for big diamonds and bold designs offered without all the trappings of a flashy retail presence. His clientele list could have been taken from the pages of Who's Who in Kansas City. Local politicians, celebrities, philanthropists and even a few not-so-local television stars started out as a customer and then became a close personal friend who shared Joe's passion for fine jewelry and fabulous antiques.

The remainder of that jewelry and all of those fabulous antiques must now be sold to the highest bidder. Joe's favorite pieces gathered over half a century of buying trips to New York and forays into Estates around the Mid-west will be sold by Joe's heirs and The Joseph Earl Candioto trust.

It does not appear that Joe ever passed the opportunity to buy anything in the French Egyptian Revival style 'retour d'Egypte' and he did manage to gather his share of all things French besides. He liked Napoleonic objects, Sevres porcelain (a lot), Marble Sculpture and Fine Bronzes. The bigger the better. He had French Empire upstairs and Chinese Antiques down. It all came out of his 2500 square foot Leawood, Kansas home, including the 10' x 13' tapestry from 17th century, but no one could ever get it all back in there the way he had it. This will be the third and final sale of his personal collection and the best has definitely been saved for last.

Sarah Burt and Patti Davis never met, but they nevertheless shared some common interests in Art, Art History, The American West and the enjoyment of surrounding one's self with objects that please.

As we began to work with their collections we realized there existed a chemistry between these two ladies who never met but certainly had a lot in common. Patti is a student of Art History and the American West, as Sarah was. Both were drawn to Native American subjects and historical objects, and both enjoyed going a bit deeper into understanding the things they were drawn to while enjoying the beauty of those objects. Their collections include identical genres but different artists, they include matching subject matter but different periods and mediums, they include items that could have been found in either collection but only now have come together.

This auction of Combined Collections will include but will certainly not be limited to:
  • Early to Mid 20th C. American Paintings
  • Contemporary Western Art
  • Native American Pottery
  • Early to Mid 20th C. American Pencil Signed Prints
  • Thomas Hart Benton Lithographs
  • Native American Jewelry
  • Important 19th C. books on Native American Subjects
  • 19th C. Hand Colored Native American Portrait Lithographs
Read Sarah Burt's biography here and learn more about Best Friends Animal Society to whom the proceeds from her property are to be donated. And plan now to attend this interesting auction of Art and History.

Gene Caples was a quietly accomplished and successful designer and craftsman who worked in Kansas City in the 1960s. He attended the Kansas City Art Institute, earning his Bachelors of Fine Arts in Industrial Design in 1959.

In 1963 he was accepted to the legendary Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Michigan where he worked with Julius Schmidt, earning his Masters of Fine Art in Sculpture in 1965. By doing so he joined Cranbrook's astounding list of alumni that includes Harry Bertoia, Charles Eames, Ray Eames, Florence Knoll and Ero Saarinen, just to name a few.

Like his more well-known fellow alumni, Gene designed furniture and worked in bronze throughout the 1960s. Later in life, he joined the Kansas City Woodworker's Guild, founded in part by fellow Kansas City designer Clarence Teed. It was in this late 20th century time frame that he designed and crafted some of the more contemporary pieces you'll see here.

We've combined a few classic mid-century commercially designed pieces and some complimentary original art with Gene's Bronze Sculpture and Furniture designs, along with some examples from his contemporaries and friends to create a fun and well-rounded offering of Art and Design.

This auction also includes a few hard-edge paintings by Edward Lewis(1914-1992)

The Wagner Family Collection of

Antique Clocks and Mechanical Music

Founded 1945

Sunday, April 17

View the Music Boxes in Action:

For more than 70 years, Florent Wagner and his parents have been studying, collecting and caring for their Fine Antique Clocks, Mechanical Music Boxes and Antique Bells. Yes, that's right, antique bells and not just crystal or porcelain bells, but mechanical and spring driven ringing devices as well. If you like examples of Yankee Ingenuity, you'll love this collection of interesting mechanical bells along with the workings of the antique music machines and clocks.

If you're a seasoned collector familiar with high quality examples such as these but short on opportunities to acquire same - you're in luck. This second generation collection is filled with great fresh-to-the-market pieces. Florent has maintained the collection all his life, but must now make plans to downsize and move to a smaller one-story home.

For more than two decades, Joseph's Jewelry in the Georgian Village Shops was one of Kansas City's best kept secrets among lovers of fine jewelry. With his own personal sense of style and connoisseurship, Joe Candioto quietly became something of a "jeweler to the stars" known for big diamonds and bold designs. His clientele list could have been taken from the pages of Who's Who in Kansas City. Local politicians, celebrities, philanthropists and even a few television stars started out as a customer but later became a close personal friend who shared Joe's passion for fine jewelry and fabulous antiques.

Joe succumbed to cancer in November of 2015. With his passing, the Joe E. Candioto Trust decided on a complete liquidation of his fine Jewelry inventory at auction. This liquidation will begin with what we feel are many perfect choices for one's special Valentine. The style and quality are in the Joseph's tradition but the price - that will be determined through the auction process and each piece will sell to the highest bidder without reserve.
