A Japanese Satsuma ware recumbent elephant supporting a large jar decorated with figures including a group of Rakan whose heads are surrounded by golden nimbuses, Kannon Bodhisattva, a dragon, and other dark-haired legendary Buddhist/Daoist personages, Meiji period late 19th century. Shimazu clan Satsuma mark on base, with inscription by maker, "Satsuma yaki Dai Nihon Taizan Hotodasei" (Satsuma ware of Great Japan produced by Hotoda workshop and painted by Taizan). Overglaze enamels and gold pigment on earthenware. Measures 11.75 x 9 inches.
Very good condition. There are no chips, cracks, repairs or evidence of wear.
