UNUSUAL AMERICAN LIBRARY TABLE W/ DOGS & MASKS

331: UNUSUAL AMERICAN LIBRARY TABLE W/ DOGS & MASKS

A good mahogany colored table with fine, clean top having rope twist edge, deep skirt with matching edge and gargoyle masks at each leg, large barley twist turnings on each leg joined by a lower stretcher, raised on dog faced iron feet, two drawers at either end.

This table was made by the Merklen Brothers spiral furniture company in New York City between 1879 and 1897. The Merklen boys held many patents for specialty twist woodturning and for decorative metal furniture ornamentation. This table is an excellent example of their unique design work and fine craftsmanship. See my May 2005 Magazine Antiques article entitled 'Moorish Fretwork Furniture' for more information about this very interesting company.
Measures 28 x 43.5 x 30.25 inches.
Very good condition overall, no damage or repair, little if any wear, nice, slightly loose.
$300 - $500
