6946: 1879 NEW ORLEANS FIRE CO #20 SERVICE CERTIFICATE

A wood engraving published by Douglas Engraving, New Orleans. The format being a central vignette of a fire company fighting a fully involved blaze with interesting equipment and a team pumping while a fireman on ladder receives a document from an airborne angel who brings him a certificate of exemption. The document also includes printed text outlining the certification of a Phillip Nagele as Active Fireman per Louisiana legislature. The printed portion is heavily embellished with custom ink lettering detailing Washington Steam Fire Co No. 20, Incorporated April 1848, New Orleans, Louisiana, the subject Phillip Nagele having been made Exempt May 1879, additional ink decoration and lettering throughout, cut-outs with ink decoration and backed by embossed gold foil; plus additional cut-outs creating red, white & blue ribbons.
