An interesting solid brass surveyor's transit, the original wood case with paper labels. Nice hand engraved maker's signature of James Foster Jr, Cincinnati. Paper label under lid with text that includes: James Foster Jr, Mathematical and Philosophical Instrument Maker, Cincinnati Ohio.
The device is approx 2.5 inches wide by 17.5 inches long by 6 inches tall; wood case is Approx 7 inches wide by 19 inches long by 3 inches tall.
