The still life composition of bountiful corn spilling from a 19th century wood stave barrel constructed using bent wood hoops, each ear is meticulously depicted in the distinctive thick impasto technique unique to Alfred Montgomery, an orange pumpkin in the composition denotes the time of year and its bounty, signed lower right, displayed in a handsome frame of the period.
Board measures 23.5 x 30, the frame is 35 x 38 inches.
Very good condition noting scattered areas of professional inpainting along the lower edge, inpainting estimated at less than 10 percent of the total surface area. There are no other issues of major scratches, losses or repairs.
Provenance: The Van Dyke family, Marshall, Missouri civic leaders and entrepreneurs conducting business on the Marshall, Missouri square beginning around 1871. Their family collection of Art and Antiques spans more than four generations.
