56: A FINE AND RARE ROOKWOOD BANQUET LAMP SIGNED DALY
Matthew A. Daly
(Dated 1894)
A gorgeous glowing example of Rookwood's early standard glaze. the slip decoration of poppy flowers and, in some areas, wheat stalks against subtle shaded hues of gold, brown and green; the rounded font raised on a slender and graceful standard of flaring downswept form ending in a base with openwork and 'S' scrolls. The work is signed MAD in impressed letters on the underside of the base for Matthew Daly (1860-1937), along with the Rookwood cipher topped by eight flame marks for the year 1894, shape numerals 730 and letter W for white clay.
Measures 22.5 x 9.75 inches.
Very good condition, noting a very fine and tight hairline that extends from the unglazed top rim of the slender base, just below where the font joins the base, and extends downward approximately 3/4 of an inch. The fineness is such it basically blends with the crazing. There are no other chips, cracks, repairs, scratches or areas of wear.
