22: A RARE SEVEN-COLOR PORCELAIN SIGN THE SANTA FE SCOUT

The high quality porcelain enamel sign in a greater range of colors than is typically found in the baked porcelain technique of manufacture, emblazoned the side of the Scout passenger cars that ran from Chicago to Los Angeles from 1936 to 1948.
An identical 'Santa Fe Scout' porcelain sign is pictured on the cover of More Porcelain Enamel Advertising (Schiffer Book for Collectors) by Michael Bruner, 1997. The mounting holes for this sign, as detailed in the images, are punched, not drilled. A friend of Ed McHugh's has commented that Ed owned this sign long before any copies came to the market, and that he himself purchased an example out of Chicago 25-plus years ago.
Measures 20.25 x 40.5 inches.
Very good condition, grade 9-plus, very minor edge chips, no damage or repair, nice shine - an excellent example.
