557: A PORCELAIN ENAMEL SIGN FOR WHITMAN'S CHOCOLATES

The two-color sign with advertising that includes the word AGENCY. During the 1920s, Whitman's adopted a distribution system that established 'agencies' to ensure consumers that they were getting genuine Whitman's CHOCOLATES AND CONFECTIONS.

An ad from 1924 reads, 'The Whitman agency is usually the leading drugstore, because the drugstore nowadays is one of the most progressive service stations of the public. You may go into any Whitman agency, even in remote parts of the country and buy candy with confidence.'
Measures 10 x 20.25 x 1.5 inches.
Very good condition, noting edge chips, some surface scratches and decent shine, slight bend, loss and rust on the flange, grade 7.
