76: A SCARCE H.C.EVANS KICKING MULE SHOOTING GALLERY TARGET

The large mule form target on striking sheet iron back plate in old blue paint with shot-peened visual effect of a pointillist painting created by the impact of thousands of individual lead bullets, The striking black mule in old paint floats out front with concentric ring bullseye in alternating red and blue. When in operating condition, a bullseye shot would activate the weight driven action and pivot the mule's legs at the hip in a kicking back action. Very few of this form are known to exist and none with the backing plate. Illustrated on page 75 of an undated Evans catalog as 'Evans' Kicking Mule' and on page 79 on Gallery R.

Pictured on the inside front dust jacket and on page 68 of Sellers' book (Figure 5.12).
Measures 24 x 30 inches, excluding stand.
Outstanding dry old surface found only on a shooting gallery target from the early 20th century. There are no issues of damage or repair, important hard to find surface overall with some oxidation.
