THE ONLY KNOWN H.C EVANS MAN IN THE MOON GALLERY TARGET

192: THE ONLY KNOWN H.C EVANS MAN IN THE MOON GALLERY TARGET

This iron caricature of the Man in the Moon, cast in great detail with large open grin and mirthful eyes, is accentuated in ways not typically found on shooting gallery targets. Manufactured by H.C. Evans Company in the first quarter of the 20th century, it is the only known example of its type. It would have originally had an iron gong target on its back side visible through the mouth and eye openings. A similar lot manufactured by Emil Hoffmann with gong intact and toothy grin is offered in this same auction (lot 182). A target with this much impact would have had a prominent place in any shooting gallery. Illustrated on page 67 in an Evans catalog on Gallery S and on page 79 as part number 106.

Pictured on page 66 of Sellers' book (Figure 5.6). This is the only example the Tuckers have seen or heard of in their 30 years of collecting.
Measures 15 inches in diameter.
Very good shooting gallery target condition, very good old park paint, or possibly the original, with wear as shown, the back gong is missing.
