244: A RARE VARIANT CAST ZINC OWL SHOOTING GALLERY TARGET

The owl was a favorite subject of shooting gallery target manufacturers. This completely unique example is very thick and heavy, the style bears a resemblance to owls made by the Chicago Manufacturers shown in Step Right Up! Classic American Target and Arcade Forms (Figures 5.26, 5.27 and 5.28). Cast from zinc. Weight 12 pounds.

Plus an early 20th century cast iron stylized owl surmount displayed on custom iron stand. The cast iron depiction of an owl's face and head with short spread wings, nice cast feather and other details, two mounting tabs with holes suggest it was an ornament or logo.
Target measures 11.75 x 5, the surmount is 3.75 x 12 inches, excluding the stands.
Target is in very good condition. The surface of this target is like nothing else. Created by age, exposure, and hundreds of tiny divots as if from the peening of a small hammer it has a dry, variegated abstract orange peel-like effect unlike that of other antique objects.

The surmount owl is in very good original condition with remnant paint. There are no issues of damage or repair, light wear at some edges.
