18: AN EARLY 20TH C. CARVED AND PAINTED FOLK ART BALL TOSS GAME

The six hand-carved and painted wood folk art figures in rare original paint, tattered fabric dresses and headscarves depicting grotesque caricatures of African American figures as seen during the Jim Crow era. Each figure is hinged individually to the base, and the unit was used as a set of targets in ball toss games at amusement venues.

Pictured on pages 114 and 115 of Sellers' book (Figure 8.16). This is the only example the Tuckers have seen or heard of in their 30 years of collecting.
Measures 17 x 55.5 inches.
Original untouched condition throughout, as shown subject to the obvious effects of age and exposure.
