20: A NATIVE AMERICAN MOTIF SHOOTING GALLERY TARGET FRONT

The silhouette of a Native American in headdress cast from iron, the front only from an early 20th century shooting gallery target with detailed feathered headdress and profile of an 'Indian.' During the first quarter of the 20th century, there were no less than three foundries in Chicago producing very similar, if not identical, figural shooting gallery targets. The firms of H.C Evans & Company, Emil R. Hoffmann and F.C. Mueller & Company each claim this figure as it is illustrated in an early Smith catalog (no. 5) on Gallery R and a part number of 56; in an undated Hoffmann catalog on Gallery 38 and as the 'Indian Head Target' part number 35; and in a Mueller catalog on Gallery A-106.

Pictured on page 65 of Sellers' book (Figure 5.5).
Displayed on custom iron stand.
Measures 19.5 x 16.25 inches, excluding stand.
