20: A RARE AND IMPORTANT PAINTED PIE SAFE WITH LINCOLN TINS
The original rectangular top over two doors above a single drawer with beveled face, the whole raised on straight square legs; probably Midwestern, the walnut case in red paint, sixteen punched tins lettered LINCOLN above crossed flags and floating stars, the tins with old blue paint have an old shellac coating that has darkened; poplar shelves, tongue-and-groove horizontal back boards of similar wood constructed with square nails, original drawer slides, sides, and chamfered bottom. The construction methods for this example and the celebratory nature of the tin designs suggest a date of manufacture around the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln.
Presidential pie safes are very rare. Only four are known: two Andrew Jackson, one George Washington and this singular Lincoln example. In 2015 a safe with Andrew Jackson tins set the record price for a pie safe at auction selling for $102, 500.00.
Measures 68 x 39 x 16 inches.
Very good to excellent condition. The hinges, legs and joints are intact and good and free from repair or replacement. The blue tin paint is believed original, the case displays an oxblood red paint with later enhancement of a lighter more Barn Red paint. Neither fluoresces under UV light suggesting any enhancement of the red paint would be at least 75 years old, the two drawer knobs are replacement pieces.
