5: A MODEL 1808 MUSKET SOLDIER INSCRIBED SAMUEL MERRILL

T. French, Canton, Massachusetts .69 Caliber US Model 1808
A fine untouched War of 1812 period musket inscribed SAMUEL MERRILL in classic early block type characters on the right side of the black walnut butt stock.

Prominent citizens of the period with the name Samuel Merrill include the Mormon Pioneer of the same name who lived from 1780 to 1878. A veteran of the War of 1812, he served as a captain of heavy artillery and later joined the exodus of Mormons from Illinois who traveled to California to take part in the war with Mexico.

A fine example of 1808 'contract' musket in untouched condition, regulation length with 44-inch barrel, the breech stamped V with eagle head and CT US Govt proof marks, stamped T FRENCH CANTON 1811, apparently all original, nice smooth dark brown patina 85%, butt plate, sling swivels, strong functional mainspring, original button-head ramrod.
Measures 5.25 x 3.25 x 59 inches.
Very good condition, noting average or below degree of handling marks, 85% finish, good bore.
