172: A LARGE AND VERY RARE IRON DEER SHOOTING GALLERY TARGET

The large, early iron silhouette target figure of an alert buck deer complete with iron bell-form target on back side and in outstanding patina. The only known example of its type to date, this monumental target, or any target of this stature would have stood in a prominent place within a shooting gallery, thus the rarity: it would have been a single unique example among many smaller duplicated examples. The maker is unknown.

Pictured on page 83 of Sellers' book (Figure 6.8).
Displayed on a custom iron stand. This is the only example the Tuckers have seen or heard of in their 30 years of collecting.
Measures 29 x 18 inches, excluding stand.
Very good largely original condition with outstanding surface that could only come about from hundreds, maybe thousands of small points of lead projectile impacts and the natural effects of age creating a dry, painted, somewhat oxidized and thoroughly untouched iron surface like no other.
