63: AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR RENDERING OF A MANGELS GALLERY

The original ink wash rendering of a William Mangels shooting gallery. The designer's rendering provides an insight as to the intent and the actual composition of a Mangels design. Many of the targets in this auction can be seen here as they were intended to appear visually to the buying public, possibly at Coney Island where Mangels got his start and later based his operations. Row upon row of star, bird and smoking pipe spinners, the ducks and rabbits on conveyors, large rotating discs slowly turning at four different points for visual effect, rows of concentric ring bullseyes and in this case rows of candles to be extinguished. Only a very few original illustrations of Mangels galleries are known to exist, this example is numbered #56 and dated 1937.

Pictured in Sellers' book page 130 (Figure 8.40).
Sheet measures 14.75 x 19.75 with an overall frame size of 20.25 x 25 inches.
Apparently the condition is very good. There are no visible issues of damage, repair, stain, discoloration or trimming. This work has not been examined outside the frame.
