246: A RARE WURFFLEIN CAST IRON SHOOTING GALLERY TARGET

This mystery target is the only known example of its type to date. It resembles a Wurfflein catalog entry listed as cat number 82. That catalog line drawing differs from this casting which faces the opposite direction, has no cast ear ear detail and is signed on the front. Though very similar, this looks to be an otter with thicker tail and without the cast ear detail in the manufacturers trade catalog. Outstanding condition, the paint is original and possesses great folk art qualities typical of Wurfflein. Signed lower front in the casting and numbered 82. The cat target numbered 82 pictured with this listing is taken from a Wurfflein trade catalog dated 16. Many company advertising materials, including the 1913 Illustrated and Descriptive Price List picture this same target, but nothing described as an otter.

Pictured on page 4 of Sellers' book (Figure 3.6).
Displayed on custom iron stand. This is the only example the Tuckers have seen or heard of in their 30 years of collecting.
Measures 12 x 16.75 inches, excluding stand.
Very good original condition, there are no issues of damage or repair, typical loss of original paint around the bullseye as expected, traces of park paint remain there. Overall, the surface is a fine dry old example of original manufacturer's paint detail.
