A 19TH CENTURY CHINESE HAND KNOTTED THRONE BACK WEAVING

337: A 19TH CENTURY CHINESE HAND KNOTTED THRONE BACK WEAVING

The late 19th century Peking weaving with ginger stepped field having three writhing dragons woven in outstanding detail with scales and white outline in pursuit of the flaming pearl framed by a continuous lotus and vine border of ginger-colored ground with something of a sculpted effect in various hues which are in some cases outlined in white; one end is straight and one is diagonal wave in shape, late 19th century.

The subject matter comes from ancient Chinese legend where dragons are depicted chasing a pearl that represents eternal life. Throne or seat back weavings are associated with royal usage.
Measures 20 x 15 inches.
Very good condition, the outer wrap may be re-done, very good overall pile, no damage, repair, stain or odor, intact and very good.
