TERRANCE GUARDIPEE (BORN 1968) MIXED MEDIA ON PAPER

43: TERRANCE GUARDIPEE (BORN 1968) MIXED MEDIA ON PAPER

A late 20th century ink and colored pencil composition on antique ledger sheet, signed lower right, sheet measures 15 x 6, frame measures 20 x 14 inches. In the late 19th century, young Plains Indian warriors imprisoned for waging war were encouraged by their military captors to record their lives and traditions on paper. Theses drawings were executed in pencil, ink, and watercolor on the pages of discarded ledgers. They depicted their conquests at war (and other rites of passage for young Indian men) on these ledger pages in a style that this artist Terrance Guardipee has been instrumental in reviving and honoring. Guardipee is 'an internationally acclaimed Blackfeet painter and ledger artist... one of the first Native artists to revive the historical ledger art tradition...". His works are held in many museum collections including that of the C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls where Sara Burt served as curator. Provenance: Sara Burt Estate.
Very fine condition as shown. This has not been removed from the frame for inspection.
