AMERICAN TALL CLOCK KEPLINGER GETTYS BURGH CIRCA 1806

45: AMERICAN TALL CLOCK KEPLINGER GETTYS BURGH CIRCA 1806

A fine and rare American walnut tall clock signed Samuel Keplinger ''Gettys Burgh'' for Samuel Keplinger (1770-1849), clockmaker, silversmith and retailer who moved from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to Baltimore, Maryland sometime after 1806, possibly as late as 1809.

The fine Chippendale style walnut case with outstanding flame twist finials and open pediment over the arched door opening to a painted sheet iron dial in completely original condition with a few minor bits of re-touch on the arch above the moon phase and at the 8 o'clock position, the moon phase dial in original paint as well, free from visible restoration, raised gold enamel spandrels centered by an oval pinwheel-like design in green at all four corners, the seconds bit above calendar aperture over the maker's signature, original elegant hands, Roman numeral chapter ring - all nice original elements. Handsome flaming urn finials, four spindle columns on the bonnet, highly figured door within the bonnet opening having fine small barber pole inlays along the edge of the arch and on the returns of the overhang supported by four spindle columns on each side of the unusual navette shape side windows. The waist section with an elegant waist door embellished by a gracefully scrolling peak and flanked by reeded quarter columns either side at the corners just above the cove molded trim of the outset base fronted by a dropped panel enclosed by an undulating frame within two more fine reeded quarter columns, all raised on four original bracket feet.
Measures 97.5 x 19 x 10.5 inches.
Very good largely original condition including the original , noting considerable repair to the door, separations to the top door veneer and the bottom rail of the top door is a replacement, very minor dial touch-up, several holes in the back board, original floor in the case, the trim on the bonnet front may be replacement, there are no serious issues of damage, repair, loss or other replacement. A push of the pendulum will advance the seconds hand and the clock will run for a minute, maybe two.
Provenance: The multi-generation collection of an early Kansas City family in the same home since 1962.
