99: A FOLK ART WATERCOLOR OF USS LANCASTER IN A GALE 1865

The fine 19th century original watercolor on paper titled 'U.S. Ship Lancaster in a gale in the Gulf of California July 20, 1865' and displayed in a period frame of deep walnut molding with gold liner, unsigned.

The seller, Judge Paul Vardeman, known for his research and findings related to 19th century American scrimshaw, has stated in writing verso that an almost identical watercolor 'obviously by the same hand' is pictured on page 408 of Marine Paintings at The Peabody by Brewington, M.V & Dorothy. his research also finds that the USS Lancaster was also fitted with a John Bellamy figurehead later.
Measures 13.25 x 15.25 inches.
Apparently the condition is very good, very clean, intact, no visible stain, damage, repair, punctures or tears. This work has not been examined outside the frame.
