192: A RARE 19TH C. MELKITE ICON WITH ARABIC AND SILVER

The egg tempera on panel Melkite icon with turquoise mounted silver applications depicting the Mother of God with infant Jesus and the Saints George and Demetrios, gilt ground with incised halo details, various inscriptions in Arabic, including a banner at the lower edge that appears to have been added later dated 1836. There is illegible lettering along the base.
Measures 20.75 x 16.5 inches.
Very good condition, noting some losses at the extreme edge in limited areas, minor surface rubs to the gilding, a split to the left of the Mother figure when viewing and corresponding loss of surface as shown, minor age shrinkage in the Mother face resulting in surface loss, a very few scattered bits of surface loss, including a spot in the banner at the bottom edge with Arabic script and date of 1836, lost stone form the Mother's silver crown application.
Provenance: The multi-generation collection of an early Kansas City family in the same home since 1962.
