5: A LARGE HEAVILY CARVED CHINESE ZITAN ALTAR COFFER

The panel top set with everted ends above a tapering rectangular form fitted with two frieze drawers fronted by carved relief designs of striding dragon amidst dense clouds, a pair of cabinet doors carved with dragons chasing flaming pearls amidst clouds, the cabinet flanked by carved spandrels and each end with paneled sides each centering a beautifully carved single dragon, the whole raised on square-section legs. Bronze mounted hardware. Measures 48 x 66.5 x 20.5 inches. Provenance: The Joseph Candioto Trust.
