PIERRE EUGÈNE EMILE-HEBERT (1828-1893) BRONZE SCULPTURE

215: PIERRE EUGÈNE EMILE-HEBERT (1828-1893) BRONZE SCULPTURE

A very fine bronze group depicting Oedipus and the Sphinx of mythology with head and breast of a woman on the body of a lion with eagle's wings. Oedipus stands dressed in animal skins, a sword at his waist. With this sculpture, the scabbard of his sword is moveable, pivoting on a pin. The plinth on which the Sphinx sits is decorated with allegories of the Sphinx's riddle. Oedipus successfully answered the riddle of the Sphinx on the road to Thebes and avoided being killed and eaten by the beast.
Signed EMILIE-HEBERT in block letters on the left side of the plinth and titled 'OEDIPE' front side on the base. Measures 36 x 15 x 10 inches. Provenance: The Joseph Candioto Trust. We ship in-house for all items with the exception of very large and or very fragile pieces and some international shipments.
Excellent condition. Original fine brown patina enhanced by darker patina within some recessed areas and on some highlight areas. No damage, repair, rubs, scratches or other issues, the sword scabbard has one lightened streak of patina.
