A rare Missouri walnut furniture type of unique design. Initially a deep cabinet on cabriole type legs; the hinged top folds out to rest on slide-out supports,a second inner hinged lid opens to reveal an inner compartment and inkwell? Measures 29.5 x 30 x 21 inches, the top is 30 x 41.5 inches when unfolded. This piece is attributed to Booneville, Missouri furniture and coffin manufacturer Louis Bendele by the consignor based on local knoledge of this piece type and description of a similar form in Charles vn Ravenswaay's The Arts and Architecture of German Settlements in Missouri: A Survey of a Vanishing Culture (University of Missouri Press, 1977).
