A 15TH C. ITALIAN SCHOOL PORTRAIT OF THE MADONNA

262A: A 15TH C. ITALIAN SCHOOL PORTRAIT OF THE MADONNA

An image of the Madonna displayed in a carved wood frame of the same period, the painting is on a coarse woven material re-lined on later material, the entire work may be over-painted. Overall measurements 33.5 x 27.5 inches and canvas measures 26 x 20.5 inches.
Provenance: Post Art Library Foundation. Notes on file indicate that the painting was purchased from Gimbell Bros., Hammer Galleries, NYC in 1941 for $198.50. The gallery had purchased it from Warner S. McCall of St. Louis, Missouri. A letter from Hammer Galleries dated 10/30/41 confirms the McCall provenance. An article about the collection's dispersal from the 10/15/41 edition of Art News Magazine are on file at the Post library. The McCall family sponsored the McCall Room at the City Art Museum of St. Louis.
We ship in-house for all items with the exception of very large and or very fragile pieces and some international shipments.
Very good restored condition. The painting has been re-lined and appears to have been largely over-painted, the 17th/18th century frame has been restored.
