38: A CIRCA 1950 NAVAJO WEDDING BASKET

A coiled polychrome basket measuring 14 inches in diameter. Navaho baskets are often used in their wedding ceremonies and held sacred foods and pollen, which the bride and groom consumed to consecrate the marriage. A herringbone edge or finish is often on the basket’s rim. The design pattern encircles the tray except for an opening or 'pathway' to the outside of the circle. The opening in the pattern, the start of the coil, and the finish at the border must be in line; this line should point east and west when the tray is used for a ceremony. Purchased Nadler Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ on March 26, 1977.
Fine to mint. No issues of wear, loss, stain, repair, fade, chip, display or other issues can be found under extensive examination
