39: A CIRCA 1920 HAVASUPAI BASKETRY TRAY

A coiled shallow tray with full ticking around the rim. The Havasupai lived at the floor of the Grand Canyon and were very isolated from other tribes. Their basketry trays are similar to the Apache but without animal forms in design. Exhibited Kansas City Art Institute’s 'Basketry: An Enduring Tradition', January 1982. Measures 14.5 inches. Purchased from Jerry Collings on April 1, 1976.
A very fine tight weave in excellent condition, an irregular lap in the weave can be seen 7 coils from the brown center, an opening dead center of the brown center. A fine example.
