Charles and Ray Eames were experimenting with bonding and molding wood laminae when they heard of the added injuries that steel leg splints were causing the wounded during World War II. On May 28, 1942 the Eames' filed a patent for a "splint, indicated by ['2 (Figure 1) is fabricated from layers of wood veneer." The design and object became the 'sculpture' seen here. Mr. and Mrs. Eames were the pioneers of formed and molded laminates or plywood.
