An oil on canvas half-bust portrait of a handsome sea captain wearing a shawl collar frock coat or tail coat and seated before a window through which a masted ship flying American flag rests in the harbor, no visible signature, a New York canvas supplier's stenciled mark verso, displayed in a good period frame - very likely the original. Canvas measures 27 x 23 in a 33 x 28 inch frame.

Good condition. Considerable touch-up and in-painting visible under black light, lower left corner, lower edge, left quadrant, scattered spots around the face and on the edge of the face, two crude patch repairs, not lined, darkened, scattered age discoloration spots, original stretchers, original untouched finish on the period frame.
