36: A 19THC. INLAID MAHOGANY ZOGRASCOPE PICTURE VIEWER
An early 19th century mahogany zograscope or optical diagonal machine. These table-top devices were used for viewing 'Vue d'optique' hand colored engravings sometimes called Perspective Views. The perspective view was laid flat on the tabletop and when viewed through the zograscope provided the viewer with an enhanced, somewhat three-dimensional image (look for lots with Vue d'optique optical engravings in this same auction). These views, of varying accuracy, were usually noteworthy sights around major European cities.
The zograscope is comprised of two adjustable inlaid wood frames, one with mirror and one with lens, both mounted to a telescoping turned column raised on a turned mahogany circular base.
Measures 25 x 10.5 inches.
