27: STUMP SPEAKING MEZZOTINT AFTER GEORGE CALEB BINGHAM

(Middle 19th Century.)
The stipple and line aquatint engraving after the original painting by George Caleb Bingham (1811-1879) is lettered Painted by G. C. Bingham lower left and Engraved by Gautier below the image lower right, center below the image lettered New York - Published By Fishel, Adler & Schwartz 94 Fulton St.

This example is printed on very thin paper, without the usual title below the image, and laid to a thicker stock in the 19th century. The stock shows residual vertical toning back side commensurate with the thin wood backing used in 19th century framing. There is an impression all around the laid sheet similar to that of a plate impression seen on most etchings.

This composition from Bingham's Election Series of the 1850s documents various strata of American society brought together to participate in the election process. Some take it more seriously than others. The figure behind the speaker taking notes is opposing candidate George Caleb Bingham.
Image measures 22 x 30 with a framed size of 36.5 x 44.25 inches.
The condition is very good, very clean, no visible stain, damage, repair, punctures or tears in the print, there are some edge tears in the stock the printed is mounted to. The print is laid to a thicker stock in the 19th century. The stock shows residual vertical toning back side commensurate with the thin wood backing used in 19th century framing. The top and side margins are close, the bottom margin is wide and without lettering except directly below the image.
