502: A MASSIVE 19TH C. GERMAN CARVED IVORY STEIN 20 INCHES

The carved figure of a horn blower atop a domed lid with band of putto and serpent amid foliate scrolls and horned mascarone masks, figural eagle thumb lift, wide scalloped rim, the hinge is comprised of a serpent head supporting carved hounds and a lion joining the body encircled by an exceedingly elaborate processional scene made up of nearly fifty figures in high relief embellished by openwork carving including riders on horseback, the body is joined by ivory pins to a base of large scrolled feet centered by male masks. The underside is scrimmed with a coat of arms.
Measures 20 inches high, 12 inches across at the handle, general diameter approximately 6 inches.
Very good condition. There are no chips, cracks, repairs, scratches or areas of heavy wear, noting that the horn blower finial figure is separate as shown in the images.
Provenance: Purchased from Brookside Antiques, Kansas City, Missouri.
