282: A 17TH C. BELLARMINE JUG WITH SILVER MOUNTS

The bulbous early 17th century German stoneware vessel with molded crest and bearded male mask on the slender rising neck is embellished with foliate engraved silver mounts at the mouth and handle, a silver foot of strap-bordered studs below a leafy band encircles and covers the base. The silver mounts bear the stamped hallmarks of J W Figg, London, 1865.
Measures 9.75 x 5 x 5 inches.
Very good condition. There are no visible chips, cracks, repairs, scratches or areas of heavy wear.
Provenance: The estate of Morton and Estelle Sosland.In Kansas City, the Sosland family name is synonymous with both giving, and the arts. Of their many contributions to the community, 'The Soslands gave one of the nation's finest private collections of American Indian art to the Nelson-Atkins' museum (nelson-atkins.org).
