201: JOHN STEUART CURRY (1897-1946) 1922 O/C ILLUSTRATION

John Steuart Curry (1897-1946)
Then a Galaxy of Fireworks Exploded in His Head and All The World Turned Black. (Painted 1922.)
The original oil on canvas served to illustrate the first appearance of Albert Payson Terhune's serial in the December 23, 1922 issue of Country Gentleman Magazine titled The Tiger's Claw, a post WWI saga in which a collie dog named Bronze plays a major role. Most Albert Payson Terhune novels weave collie dog characters into the plot.

Terhune is best known for his early 20th century franchise Lad: A Dog, for which he developed numerous sequels and generations of fans. The original has been reprinted over 70 times, culminating in a film version in 1962, some 40 years after the first novel. Numerous iterations followed the original Lad and all were of the Rough Collie breed Tehrune himself raised in his Sunnybrook Kennels.

The back side of the canvas is inscribed 'Pd Curry 12-14-22' in pencil along with other less legible writing.
Canvas measures 36 x 30 with a frame size of 41.75 x 35.75 inches.
Very good original untouched condition. UV light examination confirms there are no issues of major scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up.
