The untitled regionalist genre scene consigned by the artist's family was given the illuminating title 'Man Carrying a Paper Sack' as the descriptive title used when this piece was featured in the 2008 exhibition 'James Gantt: Works From the '30s and 40s' at Franklin Riehlman's Fine Art Gallery in New York City. It is signed lower left and dated '40. Gantt studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, first under Ross Braught and then Thomas Hart Benton who was instructor there from 1935 to 1941.
Sight size measures 12 x 16 with a framed size of 18 x 21.75 inches.
Very good condition, noting three dark areas visible under UV light only and these are believed to be original pigment, very good overall.
Provenance: The estate of Kansas City artist James Britton Gantt who, along with his wife, studied sculpture under Rosenbauer at the Kansas City Art Institute in the 1930s.
