601: AN APULIAN RED FIGURE BELL KRATER 4th CENTURY B.C.

The red-figure bell krater attributed to the Greek Colonies of Southern Italy, mid to late 4th Century B.C., is decorated on 'side A' with a seated female holding a thyrsus, attended by two satyrs along with a second seated female to the right of the scene; and 'side B' with three himation-clad male figures. Under each handle decoration of palmettes above a meander along the baseline of the scene and a band of laurel beneath the rim with ovolo decoration on the outer rim.

A thermoluminescence report from Artemis Testing Lab estimating the age at 2500 years old +/- is included.
Measures 11.25 x 11.75 inches.
Very good condition, noting a rim chip as shown, repair to one handle, restoration to the foot that encompasses nearly one-half of the bottom rim's circumference.
Known for two generations in a Wichita, Kansas estate. There is no other significant provenance available from the family consigning this lot.
